Douglas Campbell

Green candidate for Governor / Lt. Governor, Michigan · Open seat

Retired registered professional engineer; substitute high school teacher

Douglas Campbell, of Ferndale, is the Green Party of Michigan's nominee for governor in the November 3, 2026 general election, with Bobbie Clay of Benton Harbor as his running mate for lieutenant governor. The Green Party nominated him at its July 2026 convention. He was also the Green Party's nominee for governor in 2002 and 2006 and has run for U.S. House several times.

Where Campbell stands

Priorities
Names affordability, energy and education as his top three priorities for Michigan.
Education / school funding
Proposes ending the charter school system and funding schools through a statewide budget instead of local property taxes. He argues the property-tax system keeps children in poor areas in poor schools.
Education / students
Proposes better school buildings to reduce crowding, and a fund to help blue-collar and low-income high school students study abroad.
Economy / jobs and wages
Says government job-creation incentives turn into corporate welfare. Supports direct public hiring in the style of a Green New Deal, plus a Universal Basic Income.
Minimum wage
In a speech at a Green Party event, recommended tying the hourly federal minimum wage to one ten-thousandth of the total pay of the highest-paid member of Congress.
Health care
Supports creating a not-for-profit national health system, starting at the state level by taking over hospitals that are about to close, one at a time.
Energy / utilities
Supports turning electric and gas utilities from for-profit private companies into municipal agencies. Also supports adding an energy code to the building code and helping owners upgrade existing buildings.
Environment / Line 5
Supports closing the Line 5 pipeline, saying it threatens the Great Lakes.
Renewable energy / EVs
Supports covering flat roofs and parking lots with solar panels, paid on a net-metering basis, and encouraging electric vehicles.
Immigration / civil rights
Says residents need protection from the federal government and supports Bill of Rights protections for all residents. Argues low wages come from late-stage capitalism, not immigration.
